Age-Adjusted Death Rate due to Heart Attack

Measurement Period: 2021
This indicator shows the age-adjusted death rate due to heart attack per 100,000 population aged 35 years and older.

Why is this important?

A heart attack, or myocardial infarction, occurs when the blood flow to the heart is blocked, and the lack of oxygen and nutrients results in heart damage or death. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 720,000 Americans have a heart attack every year. Improving cardiovascular health decreases the likelihood of heart attack. Educating those at risk and improved access to care can help improve outcomes and decrease mortality after a heart attack.

Technical note: Data smoothing techniques are used by this indicator to stabilize results in areas with limited data by incorporating information from neighboring regions. This reduces data variability, making patterns clearer. Please use caution when interpreting data for a single county during one measurement period. Instead, analyze statewide patterns for a specific measurement period or study data from a single county over multiple measurement periods for more accurate insights.
