School Suspension Rate

Measurement Period: 2022-2023
This indicator shows the percentage of students (grades K-12) who were suspended or expelled for any reason during the academic year ending that period.

Why is this important?

Suspensions are used as a disciplinary tactic for students across the United States for any of a long list of reasons. Out-of-school suspension has been linked to adverse student outcomes and poor staff performance. Students suspended from school lose important instructional time and are therefore less likely to graduate on time. They are also more likely to repeat a grade, drop out of school, and become involved in the juvenile justice system. Out-of-school suspensions drive lower graduation rates and fuel higher dropout risks, resulting in considerable economic costs.
